The 2025 wildfire destroyed the previous home down to its concrete foundation. Following a detailed evaluation with the homeowner’s insurance company, rebuilding was determined to be the most viable path forward. The existing raised concrete platform and foundation caissons were carefully reviewed by DA+D Inc.’s structural engineers and city inspectors and confirmed to be structurally sound for reuse.
Working closely with the owner, the design team created a home that prioritizes wildfire resilience while supporting the needs of a growing family. The new design features an open floor plan, passive solar strategies, and modern amenities that maximize natural light, ocean views, and energy efficiency, resulting in long-term utility savings.
Fire-hardening measures exceeding local code requirements were incorporated throughout the project. These efforts earned the home a Wildfire Prepared Home Designation from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), providing meaningful insurance premium reductions.
As a contribution to the fire-impacted community, DA+D Inc. also volunteered to redesign the adjacent public coastal access, enhancing both the beach entry experience and its integration with the residence.
To ensure maximum resilience against future wildfires, the following advanced mitigation strategies were implemented:
